IS MARIE THE SECRET ONLY CHILD OF AVA GARDNER? Ava Gardner, MGM films' leading lady of the 1940s and 50s, beautiful, strong-willed wife of Mickey Rooney, then Artie Shaw and finally Frank Sinatra, heart-breaker of Howard Hughes and others, never had a child? Or did she? Ava was born in December 1922. She grew up poor in rural North Carolina, youngest of seven children of Mary Elizabeth and Jonas Gardner. In her teens she blossomed into a beautiful young woman. Professional photographs taken while she visited her eldest sister in New York City led to a screen test and eventually to a sizzling Hollywood career. Marie Elizabeth Foglia was born in April 1938 in New York's Borough of The Bronx. Her father, William Foglia, had theatrical connections in New York City and was a movie extra. At five, Marie was put temporarily into an orphanage with her younger sister. She recalls that while there she was visited by her father and by Ava Gardner, who said that she was Marie's mother, but could not take her back with her because her own mother had just died. In the ensuing decades, numerous visits from Ava occurred. Ava Gardner would have been 15 and unwed at the time of Marie's birth. Oddly, Marie's birth certificate was sealed - and not at birth but when Marie was 15, two years after Gardner and Sinatra married. She has sought to get it unsealed, to no avail. She would welcome DNA testing with a Gardner relative. Ava Gardner's Daughter? explores the strengths and weaknesses of Marie's...

Gardner was born in the small farming community of Brogden, North Carolina, the youngest of seven children (she had two brothers; Raymond and Melvin, and four sisters; Beatrice, Elsie Mae, Inez and Myra) of poor cotton and tobacco farmers; her mother, Mary Elizabeth ("Mollie") Gardner (née Baker) was a Baptist of Scots-Irish and English descent, while her father, Jonas Bailey Gardner, was a Roman Catholic of Irish American and American Indian (Tuscarora) descent. When the children were still young, the Gardners lost their property, forcing Jonas Gardner to work at a sawmill and Mollie to begin working as a cook and housekeeper at a dormitory for teachers at the nearby Brogden School. When Gardner was 13 years old, the family decided to try their luck in a bigger town, Newport News, Virginia, where Mollie Gardner found work managing a boardinghouse for the city's many shipworkers.
