Someone asked today if I was planning to remove my gel nails prior to delivery. I’d never heard of this before. Are we supposed to have bare nails during labor? She said it’s something to do with a potential c-section situation. Online is a mixed bag of info and my OBGYN never mentioned anything. Curious what the wider group heard or was told.

Uh, no way. I literally just got my nails redone. Matte black too. I do powder dip. At my NST today the nurse just turned the pulse ox slightly sideways and got a great reading. Keep your nails!

They usually say bc of all the chemicals used it can be harmful if you have to put your finger in babies mouth. But I’m not sure about c section? Maybe due to possible infection if your nails touch the open wound when you put ointment on or something idk lol

not sure what the right answer is but I’m a respiratory therapist and sometime acrylics and gel can interfere with pulse ox readings so it might be best not to have it, if it’s an issue they’ll take it off if they can!

Generally, DRs don't want you to have your nails painted when you have surgery bc they can assess your nail beds to determine blood circulation/oxygen levels. But you're so closely monitored during labor (and even surgery) that I don't think it's a huge concern - no one's ever mentioned it to me through either pregnancy. I had mine baby blue with my 1st and just repainted them the same color tonight to welcome my 2nd baby boy 🩵

my cousin told me this as I am planning to get a mani pedi before delivery. She said it’s so they can see your nails for oxygen and also to not do gel. So I plan on getting a clear polish for my fingers and then a colour on my toes :) main thing is I just want to feel a bit spruced up so I’m not too fussed to be honest.

I had gel on my fingernails while in the ER a few months back and the pulse monitor on my finger was not working properly as a result. It kept faulting and was very frustrating. I just got my nail polish removed this week so that they’re clean when I deliver just to be safe.

I asked my OB because I thought the same thing.
She said gel polish is fine!
Just did my C-section with it on, no one gave me a hard time.
